Her last comment had sent him reeling. Her mind had flashed again, slamming him like a wave crashing against a rocky shore as her silvery brightness overwhelmed his senses and thoughts. The silence in his head was vast and deafening. He staggered back, reeling, and fought to keep his voice level as he asked, “What happened between you and Dubric?”

She raised her hands and gestured around her. “This whole mess. He’s not being honest with me. Risley told me he’d be set up to be blamed for the killings, but Dubric could have warned me about the rest. He could have talked to me, but instead, I’ve remained alone except for Risley’s Knights. Thanks to Dubric, I don’t even have a change of clothes, for Goddess’ sake. No money, no job. Nothing but questions and worries. And his crazy scheme got Risley hurt.”

She wiped at her eyes and Aswin realized she was not only angry, she was terrified. “Milady—” he started, but she cut him off, an unexpected side effect of arguing with someone he could not read.

“I was supposed to keep notes.” She pulled a folded square of parchment from her pocket and shook it at him. “Risley told me Dubric would ask me about things I’d heard, but he never came. He had men killed, right in front of me. He...” she hitched a sob and stomped her foot, crushing the tears before they began, and shoved the parchment back into her pocket. “He let the people of this castle hate Risley, even encouraged them. He let the people hate me. No one believes me about Risley’s innocence, not even my friends anymore. I’m alone here and Risley might be dying and I don’t know what to do.”

“I am so sorry,” Aswin said, cautiously approaching her. He had no idea what she might do, no idea what she might say, and he felt off-balance and uncertain.

She shook her head and stomped her foot again. “I don’t want your sorrow, I want answers. What am I supposed to do?” she asked, her voice cracking. “I’m a commoner, for Goddess’ sake. I don’t know anything about this sneaking around, partial lies, hiding-the-truth crap you nobles seem to thrive on. I’m trying help catch that monster, to do whatever it is I’m supposed to do, but I don’t know what that is. No one will tell me the truth. Dubric acts like he wants Risley to pay for the murders, but no, it’s just a trick to find the killer. You’re supposedly a bounty hunter, intent only on getting your reward for Risley’s capture, but no, you’re actually his brother and this is another trick to catch the killer. What else is a trick? Everything? Did Friar Bonne trick me too? These Knights? Who am I supposed to believe?”

She wiped at her eyes again and he saw dampness on her fingers. “What am I supposed to do?”

He tried to reassure her. “You are doing fine, Milady. Truly. And you can trust each of us.
